My Students

I am lucky to be the school counselor in my neighborhood school and I have enjoyed getting to know these kids and their families for over 10 years. Our kids come from many different backgrounds. We are a Title 1 school with programs in EL and Special Education. Art is integrated into our curriculum and our students excel academically. I enjoy working with our over 500 students in the Social and Emotional areas of learning. Over the years there has been an increase in Anxiety and Depression in kids, but also an inner strength these kids have to share compassion and a drive overcome these challenges. Together, the students and I work on making our school a safe and happy place to be.

My Project

The school counseling office is used for many things such as meetings with parents, small groups with children, and individual lessons with students. This rug and chair can help make the office feel more peaceful and calm and give kids a quiet place of their own when needed. Students are taught a "Toolbox" curriculum. "TOOLBOX is a research-based, community-tested Kindergarten through sixth grade social and emotional learning (SEL) program that strengthens children’s innate capacity for resilience, self-mastery and empathy for others through its curricula, methods, and practices." A donation to this project will help make a cozy and quiet spot for students to come and use tools they have learned to cope Anxiety, Depression, and just daily stress. Just a few minutes in a quiet spot can help a student re-focus and get motivated to learn.
