"If you don't like how things are, change it! You're not a tree." --Jim Rohn. Fourth Grade is such an exciting year of school, but also probably one of the toughest! Students are coming from learning to read to reading to learn. My students love learning and they all learn in different ways! Some of my students like to work in pairs or small groups. Others would rather work independently. There are some who like to sit someplace other than their chair. I have others who like to lay on the floor. And still others who do better standing. I also have students who need total silence because any little thing can be a huge distraction to their learning. They learn in so many different ways.
Think about when you are working, or trying to watch a really good show, or trying to enjoy that great book, but you can't! You can't because of all the noise going on around you. There are people talking, some are laughing, some just talk too loud, or you can hear the buzzing of the lights or other device, someone else is kicking the leg of their table/chair, and another one keeps clicking their pen! Oh, how these noises can be so distracting! My students need cancellation headphones to help them concentrate on the task at hand when they are working independently. Help my students be able to listen to the book/text on tape or online. Help my students be able to truly work to the best of their abilities without all of those distractions and more. Please give them their quiet place within the same space as everyone else.
