My students face many struggles. Many of them come from low-income backgrounds and over 70% of them qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. My students need a whole lot more than lectures and worksheets to prepare them for a successful future. It’s my goal to prepare authentic learning experiences that give my students the opportunity to develop and apply 21st-century skills. My students are the future and they need meaningful learning experiences and access to technology to help them overcome the challenges they face.
As my students read Ender's Game this year, I want to incorporate a number of exciting activities tied to some of the informational texts we'll be studying about astronautics and space travel. We will be doing several escape room type puzzles and challenges tied to the book and articles we'll be reading. My students will to work in teams to decipher messages and locate hidden clues in their bags as they explore different scenarios and missions inspired by the novel. They will have to find the invisible messages written on the blank puzzles with their UV flashlights and follow the clues to find ways to open the locks to reach the next stage of the puzzle. As they work to accomplish their tasks within a limited amount of time, each 5 teams will have to take on a different responsibility in order to solve their part of the final puzzle and unlock one of the 5 different padlocks and complete their mission as a class.
