My students are typical high schoolers. My students are eager to learn and they appreciate it when given the opportunity to learn by applying the math they are learning. My students are also typical in that many struggle with math and consider it to be one of their most difficult courses. Incorporating art into the abstract concepts they are learning helps them see the use of the mathematics that they are studying. Math is not a boring and difficult subject - it is an exciting one.
The String Art Project is a project where students sew geometric patterns. This project is a great way to teach and/or reinforce a variety of math concepts such as patterns, sequence recognition, geometric vocabulary, algebraic vocabulary, and constructions. Creating string art is easy, fun and a creative way to learn mathematics. Students are also able to use their originality to develop amazing art pieces. The students will connect string line segments on cardboard to create geometric patterns that look circular, hence creating curves from lines. Also, many students will get their very first experience at sewing and threading a needle.
